Sandra J. Gierke (American, b. 1938) A beautiful textural abstract oil painting on board, by Chicago artist Sandra J. Gierke. Signed lower right “Gierke”. Framed in dark oxblood or cordovan red frame with linen matting and under glass. Measures 50.25in x 39in framed and 39in x 27.5in image only. Condition: Painting in excellent condition, frame has a few minor nicks and scratches noticeable only under scrutiny. Gierke's work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago alongside Robert Natkin and many other renowned Chicago artists in 1959, 1960 and 1961. In 1959, Gierke won the first place William and Bertha Clausmann prize for her work exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago. Gierke would later become a member of Artemisia’s Chicago Women’s Art Cooperative.
